Additionally, we will review its price history till now to better understand its future price movement. So let’s start and learn together.
What is Tezos?
Tezos is the open-source, proof-of-stake (PoS) Blockchain network based on Smart Contracts, in a way similar to Ethereum. Therefore, Tezos is considered a potential rival to Ethereum. Tezos facilitates the development of decentralized applications (DApps). However, Tezos aims to offer more advanced infrastructure — in which it can evolve and develop over time without ever being at risk of hard forks. The hard fork is something that both Bitcoin and Ethereum have suffered since their creation. The Tezos blockchain solves this problem by functioning as a self-amending blockchain, which makes it one of the most promising projects in the crypto space today. Furthermore, Tezos is well-known for its security and high transaction rate. Tezos is capable of facilitating as many as 40 transactions per second (TPS). This rate is much higher than the TPS achieved by Bitcoin and Ethereum, which is at 4.6 TPS and 15 TPS, respectively.
Tezos describes itself as “secure, upgradable and built to last” — and says its Smart Contract language offers the precision required for high-value use cases. Tezos claims that its approach is future-proof and will “remain state-of-the-art long into the future,” which means it can take advantage of future developments in blockchain technology. The Tezos technology was first released in a white paper in September 2014. Following a series of delays, the Tezos mainnet launched four years later. Moreover, Tezos gathered $232 million in one of the biggest ICOs of all time.
XTZ (also called a Tezzie) is the native cryptocurrency of the Tezos network. The XTZ coin can be used as a medium of exchange or as part of participation in the platform’s on-chain governance functions. What’s important to note is the governance model that functions through the holders of the coin.
Each upgrade made by developers that have to be implemented on the chain is subject to a vote among all stakeholders. Developers receive XTZ if their upgrade or modification proposals are accepted. In other words, governance is prominent to Tezos because it is needed to grow the network properly over time, appropriately increase speed, add security and other functionalities.
Thus, investors should also consider that there is no road map for Tezos as with other cryptocurrencies because the community needs to decide on the direction to take, which might be problematic or unpleasant for some. In this way, investors who believe in the democratic mechanism and innovative technology that Tezos offers feel particularly good about XTZ.
The Tezos project was launched by Arthur and Kathleen Breitman in 2014.
Arthur & Kathleen Breitman
However, not everything went as planned by the Tezos team. Arthur and Kathleen Breitman, while establishing Tezos’ successful ICO, established the official Tezos Foundation in Switzerland. The situation quickly became complicated thanks to Swiss law stating that the board members of foundations must be independent – which means while the Foundation itself would be able to purchase intellectual property from Dynamic Ledger Solutions, the Breitmans could not sit on the foundation’s board.
As a result, Johann Gevers – the founder of the Crypto Valley association – was quickly appointed as head of the board instead of Breitmans themselves. In the Swiss legal system, which offers loose ownership statutes, this meant that Gevers gained control of the Foundation.
Later, Reuters reported that Arthur and Kathleen Breitman submitted a 46-page letter to the Tezos Foundation board, calling for Gerver’s immediate dismissal and demanding that the couple play a “substantial role” in a new structure.
The Breitman’s attorney accused Gervers of “self-dealing, self-promotion and conflicts of interest,” and demanded his suspension for a month, to which Gervers reportedly protested.
Gevers argued that the Breitmans were trying to exert control over the project, which goes against the decentralized structure they were trying to build. Gervers refused to step down, and subsequently, four different class-action lawsuits were filed.
However, Tezos’ development did not cease during the Breitmans’ long-lasting legal battle with Gervers. It was only when the Breitmans recovered control of the project’s source code that they were able to resume working on the project. Also, Gervers stepped down eventually, and the conflict settled in March of 2018. This controversy caused a lot of problems for those that invested in the ICO as Tezos lost half of its value. Interestingly, all these incidents showed that Tezos’ team was not completely safe from the problem they were trying to solve — i.e., division.
Tezos Price History

A few months after its successful ICO in 2017, Tezos ran deep into several lawsuits that we talked about before. These lawsuits had a damaging effect on the token price and kept it from growing properly. At that time, the XTZ price was playing between $1.5 and a little above $2. In December 2017, when Tezos was tasting the $5 mark, it was issued with another lawsuit that saw the price drop to $3.9 in a few days. This drop wasn’t significant, and Tezos quickly revived.
In January 2018, the digital asset touched its current all-time high price of $5.7. But XTZ fell from its high price and ended 2018 at $0.5. This drop was the beginning of a prolonged bearish market that only turned bullish in March 2019.

In essence, XTZ experienced significant growth in 2019 and 2020. XTZ achieved significant growth by increasing %1,000 and surpassed most of the coins that were already ahead of it. XTZ quickly rose from 22nd place to close the top 10 list at the end of 2019. Experts believe that the growth was due to improved accessibility and a significant boost in liquidity. After this, the Tezos price trend turned down and started ranging.
Tezos Price in 2020
The Tezos price dropped and started 2020 on a bearish trend. XTZ crashed in Mid-2020 and didn’t recover until February 2021. In any case, this was not evidence of investor disinterest. The decline in prices affected the entire cryptocurrency market. XTZ regained its value again and hit $4.4 in August 2020. This increase came just after Tezos completed its three-year lawsuit. So, XTZ ended 2020 much better than it had gone into it.

Tezos has emerged as one of the most promising crypto projects, and in looking at where the project is today, it remained steadfast on its promise to provide a protocol that can develop on its own without hard forks. The core idea of it being future-proof by using on-chain governance is quite attractive to investors. Tezos has a bright future as it continues well to build partnerships and develop its network. Moreover, Tezos has been working towards a closer relationship with Ethereum. This cooperation among successful blockchains suggests that Tezos will be able to take more advantage of other tools and services in the future.
Tezos enjoys advanced technology, a novel language, and high security. Moreover, it is masterminded by some of the smartest experts in the cryptocurrency sector. The review of Tezos price history also indicates that it has the potential to consistently perform well and recover lost value. And Tezos price predictions are somehow optimistic concerning the XTZ future in the crypto market after Bitcoin cloud mining.
All these are excellent indications that investing in XTZ is likely to generate high returns far beyond the year 2021. With that said, cryptocurrencies, in general, can be highly risky, so always proceed cautiously and never invest more than you can afford to lose.
